Painkiller Jane and Hellboy''s paths cross when an ancient Native American urn is unearthed at the foundations of a construction site. The urn is taken for examination at the city''s Natural History Museum. Against the wishes of a tribal elder present, researchers inadvertently breach the urn''s seal and release the malevolent creature bound within. It''s up to Hellboy and Painkiller Jane to stop the creature before he transforms the city into a primeval forest.
